The subject of today’s episode is Frederic, Lord Leighton a renowned Victorian artist. You might ask why he’s the subject of a podcast about the underrated in history, well, Leighton was famous for his paintings of classical, historical or biblical subjects, but what is less well known about him is it turns out he really loved painting landscapes too, and those paintings show a whole new side to him.
Leighton House in London, his former home and studio, and now a wonderful art museum, is hosting the first major exhibition devoted to Leighton’s landscapes, so I went to visit and had a chat with senior curator Daniel Robbins for this episode.
There’s some really beautiful works in the exhibition that I don’t think the photos quite do justice to, so I strongly recommend visiting the exhibition and seeing them in person if you want to look at landscapes with a bit of a difference. Meanwhile, of course do listen to the below episode to hear from Daniel about the background to these works, what they reveal about Leighton and the details to look out for.
